The Tweedle Dee Dictionary

Have you ever heard someone say a word, over and over and OVER again, and they say it wrong e v e r y single time? Does this drive you mad? Before I do go mad, I've started what I like to call "The Tweedle Dee Dictionary".

Today's first entry will be -
Supposably: real word is supposedly (adv. as is generally supposed)

I cannot count the number of times I have heard this word spoken incorrectly. And believe me, this is just the beginning ...

Oh, don't get me started on this! We used to have a pastor who made up words all the time. He just made them up. Nick printed up little vocabulary builders for us to keep in our pockets so we could write down new "words" as he came up with them. Here are a few of my favourites...
epidermal (what a woman gets while giving birth)
waivered - waived
apex - asterisk
I could go on and on. We've got a whole dictionary full of them!

I've got a little dictionary here too! It just gets better doesn't it?!

I'm particularly fond of "anyways," myself. I remember a girl from school (not you, Stef) who would always say "death" instead of "deaf." I'd want to throttle her. And it doesn't get much better than having a husband who gets "V" and "W" mixed up. In the past, we've had:
Wegetable
Wacuum cleaner
Wideo
Wolksvagon
Wery
Vood
Let me know if I should translate!

Hey Sue - once I heard a woman (yes, this is a true story) say that her daughter-in-law was going to be seduced. What she meant was that the daughter was going to be induced to have her baby. We all knew that the seducing had taken place about 9 months prior ...

I heard this in a movie theatre, spoken by a mid-50's woman with her adult daughter.

"Is this seat tooken?"

Don't forget "Nucular" instead of nuclear. (Care of the Simpsons) And almost everyone I know says "anyways". As far as I know, there is no "s" at the end.

Then we have the words that people say differently. Like toe-may-to and toe-matto. One of my personal faves is the herb (or is it "erb"?) basil. Now, I personally say ba-sil. Others may say bay-sil. Ditto the word hotel. Hotel or Otel? Can anyone think of any others?

Here are some from our former Pastor and his wife.

Revelant: Pertinent to other information - Relevant.
Medium: Separates road lanes, usually made of concrete - Median.
Banneded: What President Lincoln did to slavery - Banned.

And my personal favorite:
Dramatical: Somewhere in between being dramatic and speaking dramatically.

I know who you're talking about Stef and I think you should just slap her around for a good five minutes. However, if you choose to stay on the righteous path and not resort to physical violence you can always turn around and poke her with your pencil.

Just thought of another annoying word: youse. As in "Can I go with youse guys?"

I'd like to add in "guestimate".
